In Search of the Perfect Food

In Search of the Perfect Food

In Search of the Perfect Food

Fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, meat and fish… This is what we should all be eating. It’s as simple as that. And it’s easy enough when you get a reprieve with my 80/20 rule. For those who haven’t heard me say this yet: Eat healthy 80% of the time and the other 20% of the time, eat whatever you choose. Knowing that you can eat whatever you want 20% of the time usually helps people stay on track. Another benefit is that many people start losing their taste for the non-foods they used to consume, which makes eating healthy easier. A win-win situation, no matter how you slice the pizza – I mean, no matter how you look at it!

Sit with Me, Sip Some Tea, And Get Healthy!

Come sit with me, and sip some tea, while I tell you a story of one of nature’s greatest gifts. Known for its characteristic, pungent taste, the ginger root has been used for thousands of years as a medicinal herb. It boasts a long list of beneficial properties and is said to be used in over half of all Chinese herbal prescriptions.

The Staff of Life???

The Staff of Life???

Bread has been around for a very long time. Homer, the famous author of The Odyssey, referred to bread as “the staff of life.” Ancient Egyptians baked bread before the 20th century BC, and fragments of unleavened bread were found among the ruins of the Swiss Lake Dwellers in the earliest civilized communities of Europe.

A Happy Diet – It’s All About Satisfaction

A Happy Diet – It’s All About Satisfaction

A Happy Diet – It’s All About Satisfaction

We’ve all heard about diets that don’t work – so what’s different about one that does work? The key is satisfaction. Usually when someone is unable to stay on a diet successfully, it is because he or she is not feeling satisfied on all levels. Either the person is not getting enough calories, or enough of the needed nutrients, or enough volume, or enough taste satisfaction, or even all of the above! We are biologically programmed to need these desires fulfilled, and that’s a good thing, because that programming can guide us to what is healthy and right for us.

Feel Good Foods

Feel Good Foods

When was the last time you munched on celery and carrots, enjoyed an apple, or feasted on spinach salad? It’s not uncommon for people to depend on carbohydrates, sweets, or caffeine for short-term energy and then feel tired, groggy, or just plain lousy afterwards. People usually think it’s their own fault when they feel this way. The connection between the way they feel and the food they ate is never made. The chemicals put into most commercial foods play tricks on our bodies, hormones, and taste buds to fool us into enjoying that fabulous cardboard meal.

Are You Eating Healthy?

Are You Eating Healthy?

Are You Eating Healthy?

No one likes to be told what,
when, or how to eat.  When I ask patients to fill out a food diary,
which means writing down absolutely everything they put in their mouth
for a week, my popularity rating goes down – albeit temporarily.  They
often scowl, and ask what I mean by everything.  The reason for doing
this is because I want to take a look at their regular intake of food,
as well things that fall into a category that should actually be
considered recreational substances.  This category includes things that
even the most avid junk food eater wouldn’t consider a meal, yet they
are often consumed on a daily basis.  After doing this, people are
usually surprised at how little real food they eat.  Another question I
ask is if they know why they are eating.  This may seem like an odd
question, but it is actually very important.  Many people eat by the
clock, not by the body saying it’s time. .
