“A Pendulum Primer”

One of the most common and easiest-to-use tools in your metaphysical toolbox is, without question, the humble pendulum. Lots of our customers carry one with them everywhere, and use them to learn a variety of things from simple yes/no answers, to which of their chakra points are blocked, and the location of lost car keys.

The first thing we need to do before we can start using our pendulum is, of course, to get one.  Most people find that one kind of pendulum (wood, stone or metal) will work more easily for them than another, and so it is advisable to spend a few minutes testing to see which one will work for you.

To Find Your Pendulum
1.   Hold the pendulum out about a foot in front of your chest.
2.   Take a deep breath and let it out to steady your hand.
3.   Ask the pendulum (verbally or in your mind, it doesn’t matter) “Is this my pendulum?”.

A pendulum that is right for you should start moving – the direction of swing is unimportant at this stage. If it just sort-of sits there, it’s probably not a good one for you. You may be able to use it with some practice, but it is best to use a tool that responds to you immediately. Ideally, it should only take a few seconds to begin noticeably swinging.

Just like anyone who tries a skill for the first time, some people will find that they have a knack for pendulum work and will have no trouble getting a response. For others, it may take some practice. Rest assured, you CAN learn to work a pendulum, even if it doesn’t swing the first time.

If, after trying a couple different ones, you find that you are having significant trouble getting the pendulum to swing from a still point, try getting it swinging from left-to-right before asking the question, then watch for the swing to change to a clockwise or counter-clockwise motion. Many experienced energy workers use this technique because it gets a faster response and uses less energy.

‘Tuning’ Your Pendulum
The next step is to learn how the pendulum will respond to simple inquiries. The way it responds will differ from person to person. In effect, you want to find out which directions it will swing for Yes, No, and Maybe.

1.   Hold the pendulum out about a foot in front of your chest.
2.   Take a deep breath and clear your mind.
3.   Steady the pendulum (or get it swinging if you are using that method).
4.   Ask the pendulum to “Show me YES”.
5.   Note the direction of swing.

Repeat the above steps twice more, but instead ask the pendulum to “Show me NO” and “Show me MAYBE”.

Follow these questions with a few ‘test’ questions that you already know the answers to. “Is my name <insert your name>?” should, of course, come out to yes. Ask a couple obvious ‘YES’ and a couple obvious ‘NO’ questions to get it reacting properly to you.

Once these short initial steps are finished, you can ask your pendulum all manner of simple (yes/no) questions.

More Complex Questions
Once you have gotten the hang of divining simple answers with your pendulum, you may want to move on to something more complex. For this, we need to use a pendulum chart.

A pendulum chart looks like a half-circle, segmented with lines radiating out from the center. In the space between each line is written a potential answer to the question you will be asking. If you had to choose between ten courses of action, for example, you would segment the half-circle into ten sections, and write a course of action in each segment.  Then, holding your pendulum over the center, ask your question and watch for which area the pendulum swings toward – that will be your answer. If, however, the pendulum swings in a circular motion, that indicates that either the wrong question is being asked or the answer is not on the chart. Try rephrasing the question.

In this way, you can find answers to many different kinds of questions. Common charts include numbers from 0 to 100 (often in increments of 10, representing percentage), areas of the home, chakra names or colors, names of angels, etc. Any set of things you might need to choose between.

There exist a number of different types of divinatory tools, but the pendulum is arguably the most useful. It’s small enough to carry and can be reprogrammed on the fly to give any kind of answer needed, and can be made from easily-obtained materials.

Earth Lore carries pendulums made in many shapes and sizes, and made from a wide variety of materials.  As I alluded to in the beginning of the article, there are even more uses for the humble pendulum than what I have described – all manner of divinations may be made with this tool by learning a few simple variations on these basic techniques.  For more detailed explanations, we carry books that elaborate on the many uses and techniques associated with pendulum work, as well as sets of charts to help you find the information you are seeking.
