When someone dedicates his or her life to a calling, it is a beautiful thing. And, bearing witness to the result of a lifetime of perseverance is especially brilliant.
Walking the picturesque six acre grounds of the Okinawan Karate Clubs (OKC) in Northville, MI with Master Robert White is a uniquely spiritual experience. Every inch of the property is imprinted with Master White’s commitment to martial arts. Since 1973 he has taught traditional style Okinawan karate, Isshin-Ryu, to students ranging from children to adults and from novice to Black Belt. Over 100 students have been promoted to the rank of Black Belt during his tenure.
Anyone familiar with the OKC knows of Master White’s indoor classroom, or Farm Dojo. The walls are shelved with trophies, awards and photographs chronicling his long, extraordinary career as a competitor and teacher. Members of his family are also represented on these shelves with trophies and awards of their own. Here Master White’s students learn self-defense and garner self-confidence, balance and serenity through their own commitment and practice.
If this were the end of the story, it would be impressive in and of itself. However, Master White’s narrative and expertise extend beyond martial arts into the realm of healing arts. He has earned a Doctorate in Homeopathy and is trained in Iridology (the science and practice of eye analysis that reveals disease causing conditions) and Chinese Medicine (herbs). He offers both treatments and classes in Alternative Health and Herbal Energy.
Master White put his knowledge of plants to work and designed a flourishing herb garden following the tenets of Feng Shui. A stone pathway meanders through raised wooden beds of organically grown herbs and indigenous plants. Sitting areas ideal for meditation are nestled in the curvature of the winding trail which opens up into a spacious grassy area. In addition to martial arts training programs, Master White and other instructors use this space to teach Tai Chi and Qi Gong, the gentler forms of movement and energy flow.
A clear, stocked lake replete with a fishing dock and soothing fountain is inviting to children and adults alike. Tree lined clearings suitable for all manner of meditation and merriment surround the lake. Master White also tends to a sizeable, pesticide free garden home to dozens of plants bending with ripened tomatoes, eggplant, peppers (of all varieties and degree of zing) and other vegetables.
In creating the OKC, Master White created an open, family-friendly community for members to participate in various club activities. It’s quite easy for a visitor to envision a Halloween party near the woods, or a camp-out by the lake. Now Master White is reaching out to home schooling groups, boy/girl scout troops, sports clubs and other groups who are interested in renting areas of his farm for their own events. There is also space available for doctors, healers and practitioners to hold workshops, demonstrations and classes. The possibilities are limited only by one’s imagination.
Please contact Master White to schedule an appointment to see for yourself all that he has to offer at the OKC. You’ll be met with a smile and sent home with organic tomatoes (when in season).
