Let Your Light Shine

I’ve been finding it really hard to stay engaged with my friends on social media these days.  There’s been so much political posturing and anger being posted that I find myself totally turned off by that scene. The days of recipe sharing and cute pet pictures seem long gone.  While I continue to do my best to provide uplifting and motivational content from my end of things, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to avoid being affected by angry, confrontational postings from others. Now, I’ve been very careful over the years to only connect/follow people and pages that rise above the name-calling mentality. Still, I’m now seeing a trend toward negativity from those who used to be so positive.

Like an animal that’s been cornered, people begin to lash out when they feel like they’re being attacked or questioned for their beliefs, and I understand that. However, too much of this behavior places us all into a defensive state of mind which can program us to focus on our differences and completely disregard what we have in common. If you take a step back, for a moment, and really think about it, you’ll see that we all want the same things in life, even though we may choose different ways to achieve them.  We all want to feel safe, happy, healthy, loved and appreciated.

So, what can you do when confronted with this and similar situations where negativity seems to rise to the forefront? As I see it, we all have two clear choices. One is to simply disengage, leave those folks in your dust, and never look back. Or, you can limit your exposure to that stuff and contribute content that will help offset the negativity. I’m finding that my days of scrolling through the newsfeed have been temporarily paused. Instead, I check for notifications and post something at the top of the page that provides a positive, loving message. This way, I’m not bringing my vibration down but possibly bringing some light and love into someone else’s day.

Spirit loves to provide lessons to me using metaphors. One such message has to do precisely with the power of positivity over negativity, and it goes like this:

Imagine that you were in a colosseum, with all of the windows completely covered, and it was so dark that you couldn’t even see your hand in front of your face.  Now imagine that someone in the very center of that space lit a match. You would be able to see that tiny spark of light from wherever you were in that Colosseum. Spirit explains that this illustrates the power of one positive thought in a sea of negativity since darkness cannot exist where there is light.

With that image in mind, think about the power that each of us has towards shifting the negative energy of a situation to a higher vibrational, more positive energy. Since everything is energetically connected – EVERYTHING – that means that each of us contributes in some way to the collective vibration of the planet. So, stop worrying about trying to argue your way into changing others, and instead, place your attention on being the brightest light that you can be. In that case, you ARE shifting the collective vibration into a higher frequency. Yes, you should never underestimate the power of one person!

Remember that when you allow yourself to be triggered and pulled into a nasty debate, you intentionally lower your vibrational frequency to match the angry, fearful people you’re trying to stop. It’s the adage that ‘energy attracts like energy’.  Be stubborn and refuse to let anyone harsh your mellow!  Think about the spark from the matchstick in the Colosseum.  Then shine your light brightly, knowing that you’re helping to raise the vibration of the entire planet!!!
