2nd Annual Farmington Farmers Market Fit as a Fiddle Health Fair
The Farmington Farmers Market will host its 2nd Annual “Fit as Fiddle” Health Awareness Fair Saturday June 11th alongside the popular weekly Farmers Market, promoting Michigan farm based nutrition, along with local available healthy resources, products and services.
Sponsored by Beaumont Health and HeatlhQuest of Farmington the event will take place from 9:30 am – 1:30 pm offering free blood pressure, stroke, memory and spinal screenings. Beaumont’s popular “Walk with a Doctor” program will also join in the fun with a short, informative interactive walk with Dr. Joseph Lawson Williams of Farmington. “We are so excited to be out in the community” said Caroline Schairer, R.N., with the Beaumont Health Speakers Bureau. “This is all about encouragement along with an open exchange about healthy snacks, quick and inexpensive family meals, weight loss and more! Bring your questions!”
In all, over a dozen health related vendors will pop up out around the farmer’s market offering healthy juices, chair massage, yoga demonstrations simple workout routines and much more! There will also be information on meditation, mindfulness, diet and nutrition. Children can participate in a fun activity creating “produce bead bracelets” hosted by MSU Extension, Oakland County. Certified Dietician Robin Danto says this is a popular activity she is happy to lead “This is a great way for kids to learn the rainbow of locally available fruits and vegetables. We will be assembling bead bracelets of different colors with each bead representing a different fruit or vegetable!”.
Fair participants who sign up for the 10:30 am walk or a screening (beginning at 9:30) will be registered to win 6 weeks of free farm fresh Michigan produce right off the trucks of local farmers Jon and Karlene Goetz and Mike and Kathy Fusilier who have supported the farmer market for many years. “This is the kind of community support that we are eager to participate in!” said Jon Goetz adding, “Winners can redeem their entry at our farm stand anytime starting in July because that’s when local farms really start producing in great variety!”
Following the walk at 11:15, find Chef Greg Richards from Wok Asian Bistro behind the market cooktop, who will share his passion for Stir Fry with simple flavor bursting techniques and samples to try!
There will be 4 chances to win a “farm share of produce”. Farmington’s Historic Springbrook Gardens will also participate offering 5 chances to win a beautiful floral bouquet each reflecting a different month of Michigan’s natural beauty.
Finding the fair at the the market will be easy. Just look for renowned violinist Anthony Marchese and his violin as he leads us all on a path to become “fit as a fiddle!”
