Death Cafe – I Talked About Death and It Didn’t Kill Me

Why talk about death with strangers? By embracing our mortality, we can live our ‘finite’ lives better and more fully. For over five years, the Ann Arbor Death Café has been meeting monthly at Crazy Wisdom Tea Room and now draws over 30 attendees, always a mix of first-timers and ‘regulars’. Now there is a new Death Café starting in Warren on March 10, at the Dovetail Café, 29200 Hoover Rd.

At a typical Death Café gathering, topics range from “What is a good death?” to “What happens to your stuff when you’re gone?” Death Café is a safe place to explore, share and listen deeply. It’s not a support group. There is no agenda or presentation, rather, it’s a conversation led by the participants.

Since Death Café started in England in 2011, there have been over 5,000 Death Cafés in over 50 countries and in every state. They are part of the “Death Positive” movement that seeks to change the cultural conversation about death and help us live our lives better by embracing our mortality. The Ann Arbor Death Café, started by Merilynne Rush in November 2012, is the longest standing, regularly meeting Death Café in the world. Gloria Cunningham, end-of-life doula and Ann Arbor Death Café alum, decided it was high time to have a Death Café closer to home.

All adults are invited to attend. It’s free, confidential, and accessible.

Please join us! Monthly – in Warren on the 2nd Sat, 11a.m.-1p.m. at Dovetail Cafe; in Ann Arbor on the 3rd Sat, 10:30a.m.-12:30p.m., at Crazy Wisdom.
