Mists of Mackinac  Forgotten Folklore, Fantasy and Phenomena

By Joan St. John with Robb Kaczor

You do not need to be a member of TV’s Syfy ghost hunting shows to experience ghosts for yourself. “There is a growing curiosity in the paranormal as the belief that there are spirits among us, becomes more widespread.” , says Psychic Medium Joan St. John, author with International Ghost Hunter Robb Kaczor of “Mists of Mackinac: Forgotten Folklore, Fantasy and Phenomena” (StarQuest International Inc. 2012) http://www.mistsofmackinac.com She continues, “ The current trend in TV shows dealing with ghosts, and other supernatural events reflects the public interest in these topics. Ghost stories are not just for around the campfire anymore, there are many people experiencing spirit activity as well as legions of others searching for evidence of the beyond.”

Joan St. John and Robb Kaczor, both from Michigan,  travel to locations of reported sightings in order to gather evidence of spirit activity. Mackinac Island, a popular tourist attraction in Northern Michigan, is one such place, a land filled with folklore and paranormal phenomena. Anyone who has ever been curious about the ghost stories bandied about on Mackinac Island will enjoy exploring this special place. It includes a detailed guide on the “how to’s” of ghost hunting.

For the budding enthusiast Robb recommends some simple to follow rules.

#1 It is important to get permission before attempting access to private property. Not everyone shares your enthusiasm.

#2 Practice the buddy system: this way if something goes wrong you have someone with you to go get help.

#3 Know your escape plan. You will most likely be ghost hunting in the dark and may actually see or feel a ghost. Panicking  will not assist you in getting out safely. Plan your escape route.

#4 Dress appropriately-heels, handbags, capes…yes capes.. or dresses do not bode well, when crawling around in an attic, graveyard or most ghost hunting locations.

#5 Remain Calm and understand what you are getting into. You have chosen this activity, be mindful that what you may experience can be disconcerting and frightening.

#6 Respect yourself and the spirits out there- Not every spirit you may experience will be positive, therefore taunting, bullying or insulting spirits in order to make them appear, is not in your best interest.

#7 Be patient-Ghost hunting involves long stretches of doing nothing but sitting quietly and observing. What you do not see on the TV shows is just how many hours it took to garner that sound of a bump in the night, or unearthly whisper.

“The most important thing to remember,” says Robb Kaczor, to those wanting to go on their own investigation, “is to enjoy and have fun!”

Mists of Mackinac-Forgotten Folklore, Fantasy can Phenomena will assist both the novice and experienced ghost hunter to traverse Mackinac Island in search of the unexplained, and supernatural.

The book shares the experiences of psychic medium, Joan St. John, as she channels the entities that continue to haunt the Island, and provides the stories and ghostly manifestations of a variety of places to visit, , a list of equipment needed, and a how to guide to make your experience a positive one!
