Why Is Halloween So Spooky?

Every October, out come the ghosts, skeletons, witches, and haunted houses. We decorate our porches with cobwebs and pay good money to have someone jump out and frighten us! Have you ever stopped to wonder why?

Halloween carries a long history of people wondering about the unknown. Some of its roots reach back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the approach of winter. People believed this was a time when the boundary between the living and the spirit world became easier to cross.

Imagine living long ago, without electric lights. The nights were growing longer, the trees were becoming bare, and winter was coming. A strange sound outside your door could certainly get your imagination going!

Today, movies, ghost stories, and decorations keep that spooky feeling alive. A coat hanging in a dark hallway can look like a person until someone turns on the light. Sometimes, what frightens us most is simply what we cannot see.

That happens in everyday life, too. We worry about tomorrow, about change, or about something we don’t understand. Our minds can build a whole haunted house out of a few unanswered questions.

When that happens, take a breath. Turn on a light. Talk to someone you trust. Ask yourself, “What do I actually know, and what am I imagining?”

For those who believe in a spiritual connection with loved ones who have passed, this season can also offer a gentle opportunity for remembrance. Thinking of someone you love, looking at an old photograph, or sharing a favorite memory can bring comfort. You don’t have to turn that connection into something frightening.

Enjoy the costumes, the pumpkins, and the little ones coming to your door. Have a laugh and make some happy memories.

And remember: sometimes the best way to take the fear out of the unknown is to meet it with curiosity, understanding, and a little light.

Happy Halloween—and may your October be filled with more treats than tricks! Pauline,
