Q: Can one person stand in for another as a surrogate?
A: Absolutely! Surrogate Hypnosis is simply working with another person to stand for the client. Some may refer to this as a form of “Distant or Remote Healing.” Distance Healing happens in many ways—prayer, Reiki, Remote Energy Work, etc. I learned about using a surrogate when working with hypnosis back in the early 90’s through two of my teachers. The first was Irene Hickman, D.O., from Montana, and the second was Dr. Sharon Forrest from California. Their methods were very different, yet both were instrumental in the structure and foundation from which I developed the process that many hypnotherapists in The Clinical Hypnosis Professional Group use today.
Ethics is of paramount importance. We must have permission from the client who is to be worked on.
So, in what circumstances might one use Surrogate Hypnosis? It may be used by a parent whose child is too young to work with an issue using traditional methods. Even though a parent may request it for a child, we still ask permission from the child’s Higher Self. Sometimes, a friend or relative may be too ill to participate in an actual session so that a surrogate session may be helpful. One of the most interesting sessions I had was when someone served as a surrogate when the client was present during the session. Afterward, the client confirmed the accuracy of the information that came forth during the session. This may be a method of choice for the client who tends to overanalyze and feels that they may be consciously interfering with the questions asked.
