Exploring the Freedom in His Teachings
Was Jesus a hippy? Not in the flower-child, peace-sign-waving sense—but if you look closely at His life and teachings, you’ll find a deeply radical figure preaching love, nonviolence, equality, spiritual awakening, and inner freedom. At a time when society was governed by strict laws, harsh punishments, and rigid hierarchies, Jesus offered a different path—one rooted in heart, soul, and Spirit.
He taught that the greatest transformative commandments:
Love God with all your heart, soul, and mind.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
He lived these teachings, reaching out to the marginalized, eating with outcasts, healing the sick, and honoring the divine spark in everyone. He spoke of a Kingdom within, where spiritual freedom overrides external control. His message wasn’t about conforming to tradition but about awakening to truth, compassion, and connection.
Jesus also taught us not to fear. “Fear not,” He said often—knowing that fear is the chain that binds our hearts, keeps us divided, and blocks us from the love and freedom of Spirit. His way was the way of the open heart, where forgiveness heals, humility empowers, and love liberates.
In today’s world of division, judgment, and fear, His message still whispers to those who seek truth:
Be not afraid. Love deeply. Serve freely. Forgive fully. Trust Spirit.
So maybe He was a hippy after all—the kind that reminds us that absolute freedom isn’t just political or personal, but spiritual. It’s the freedom to live from your highest self.
This July, as we celebrate outer freedom, let’s not forget the inner kind. Ask yourself: What would Love do? Then do it.
CHRIST CAME TO TEACH:
Love Without Conditions
Jesus taught that the greatest commandments were to love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself. He embraced people from every walk of life—outcasts, women, the poor, and even enemies. Love wasn’t just a philosophy; it was the practice.
Community, Not Conformity
He traveled lightly, shared meals, healed strangers, and encouraged his followers to care for one another. In today’s terms, he’d be a community builder, not a competitor. He saw the Divine in everyone and invited people to live from that awareness.
Forgiveness as Freedom
“Turn the other cheek.” “Forgive seventy times seven.” Jesus knew that freedom comes when we let go of resentment and choose peace over revenge. He didn’t just teach it—he lived it, even as he was being crucified.
Simplicity and Spirit
Jesus had no interest in power, fame, or material gain. He told his followers to give freely, to trust in divine provision, and to focus on spiritual wealth over worldly success. His was a minimalist path of the soul.
Fearless and Free
One of Jesus’ most repeated messages? “Do not be afraid.” He walked through storms, betrayal, and suffering without abandoning love. He believed in a higher truth and invited us all to live with that same faith and fearlessness.
