In times of change and uncertainty, it can feel challenging to maintain a sense of focus and positivity. Yet, within each of us lies a remarkable ability – the power of our imagination. It is here, in the realm of our inner vision, that we can begin to shape a different reality, for seeing things differently truly precedes things being different.
As Charles Fillmore, a founder of Unity, wisely stated, “The creative power is within us, and unless we speak, it does not act.” Our imagination is where that initial speaking, that crucial forming of what we desire, takes place. It is the canvas upon which we begin to paint the blueprint of our lives. And when we couple this inner vision with the power of our spoken word, we set the creative forces in motion.
How can we consciously and intentionally harness this incredible gift of imagination? Here are a few practical ways to cultivate this inner power:
- Visualization: Take time to create vivid mental images of what you wish to experience. Find a quiet moment, close your eyes, and immerse yourself in the details of your desired outcome. If you long for greater well-being, imagine yourself feeling vibrant and healthy. Engage all your senses – what do you see, hear, feel, smell?
- Mental Rehearsal: Mentally practice the actions or experiences you desire to unfold smoothly. If you have an important conversation ahead, mentally rehearse it going well, seeing yourself articulate and the other person receptive. This mental preparation can build confidence and positively influence the actual event.
- Affirmative Imagining: Combine your visualizations with positive self-talk. As you hold your desired mental image, repeat affirmations that align with that vision. For example, while visualizing yourself feeling calm and centered, you might affirm, “I am at peace.”
- “As If” Technique: Begin to imagine and act as if your desired reality is already true. Embody the feelings and behaviors associated with your aspiration by living “as if” you begin to draw that reality into your present experience.
Our collective imagination as a community also empowers us to create positive change. This June, we will be holding our annual CommuniTea, raising funds to support three vital non-profit organizations working with children. This event, along with our Health & Wellness Expo, which offers access to a variety of healing modalities, reflects our shared vision of a healthy and thriving community for all. You can learn more about these and other initiatives at www.unityroyaloak.org.
The ability to form and hold a mental picture of what we want to experience is truly essential. It is the first step in the creative process. By consciously engaging our imagination, both individually and as a community, we move from being tossed about by the waves of uncertainty to becoming the active creators of our own experience.
Together, let’s Imagine a new Way of Being.
