Amanda has spent decades studying meditation, the mind-body connection, positive thinking, shamanism, and the law of attraction. In our first session, it was evident that she felt trapped in her third eye, constantly scanning those around her while remaining disconnected from her own fundamental needs. Unable to assert her needs in romance or friendship, Amanda often felt lonely and questioned why life didn’t feel nourishing. Although she identified as an empath, her detachment from her body meant that this sensitivity often led to her suffering. She struggled to trust others, not realizing that this stemmed from her disconnection from her own bodily sensations, needs, and boundaries. Ultimately, trusting others is rooted in our ability to trust ourselves to advocate for our own well-being.
With tears in my eyes, I share this story with you, dear friends: Amanda’s experience is one I have encountered many, many, many times. Deep, earnest seekers often lack proper psychological support, missing the crucial skill of agency and the understanding that an authentic “no” arises from a gentle, embodied presence, or how to meet one’s feelings truly.
It is heartbreaking to see how many sincere seekers engage in spiritual bypassing. The law of attraction can create feelings of shame, especially when it is not paired with an understanding of trauma’s effects and radical self-compassion. Religion that says “just have faith” without teaching empathic attunement to one’s needs can create a hardened heart to oneself and the plights of humanity. This disconnect can lead some individuals to experience suicidal thoughts or a preaching, punishing, angry God.
(Years of working with clergy led me to realize how bypassing one’s emotions can happen in both spirituality and religious models)
I have witnessed this happen to countless people over the years, and I could write extensively on the topic. For now, I want to emphasize that it is not your fault, nor is it simply a matter of lacking “positive thoughts” that your relationships, finances, or healing have not come to fruition. It’s not the religious person’s fault that they were not given the tools of self-love, emotional regulation, and recognizing the innocence of their bodies’ sensuality.
I work with deep seekers, therapists, and doctors who have dedicated decades to healing. Perhaps because I have been through this journey myself, I understand their struggles. I help others reconnect with their bodies and experience the pleasure of the divine. Engaging with the body is advanced work, but when combined with nervous system awareness, practices in nature, and embodied energy healing (such as Qigong), alongside the understanding that we are all intuitive and psychic, this effort leads to a truly relaxed state and a sense of knowing that you are enough in the present moment.
Psychology without spirituality can cause people to over-identify with their diagnoses or issues, losing sight of the fact that their Soul is larger than any one problem.
Conversely, spirituality without body-based psychology can leave someone feeling isolated, like an alien on this planet, unable to connect intimately.
Embracing both allows our needs to inform our empowerment, intimacy, health, and a broader vision of our True Self or Spirit. As a transpersonal body-based therapist, psychic, eco therapist, and energy healer, my approach is widely different from most healing and empowering programs.
Trauma-informed, body-based psychic development that is grounded in decades of practice is rare. Spirituality without body-based psychological support can get you high, but not free. Likewise, many self-improvement or psychology programs can leave you feeling stuck—working “harder” on yourself — spinning your wheels while remaining in place.
