Who doesn’t love chocolate? With its deep, dark color and robust bittersweet taste, chocolate has an irresistible allure—especially when it comes to love. But have you ever wondered why chocolate is so closely associated with romance?

The Mayans and Aztecs revered chocolate as the “food of the gods.” In ancient times, they primarily consumed it as a rich, bitter drink, much like coffee. The natural bitterness of chocolate comes from roasting cacao beans, and in Oriental medicine, bitter foods are believed to nourish the heart—the very center of love and emotion.

Exploring history and seeing how certain foods have been linked to health benefits long before modern science confirmed them is fascinating. Where did ancient civilizations get their knowledge about the healing properties of food? While we may never know, today’s research supports many of their beliefs.

For example, legend shows that the Aztec ruler Montezuma drank 50 goblets of chocolate daily to enhance his vitality and passion. Modern studies have shown that chocolate contains phenylethylamine and serotonin, natural “feel-good” chemicals. The brain releases these compounds when we experience happiness, love, or passion, creating a euphoric sensation—much like the feeling of being in love.
