Hypnotherapy is the art of using the hypnotic state to elicit positive change and improvement in beliefs, behaviors and physical conditions. Below are answers that may help you understand hypnosis!

Q:  Can Hypnosis Help with Irritable Bowel Disorder (IBS)

A:  Relaxation is a by-product of hypnosis.  It helps to relax the muscles, nerves, and other areas affected by IBS.  I have had people come to see me for different issues, such as Stopping Smoking, and even though I didn’t address the IBS specifically, they were greatly relieved of the symptoms.  That was over 20 years ago.  I have since developed programs that address Crohn’s, IBS, and other “diseases of the gut” that specifically target the symptoms that people suffer from.  Our Clinical Hypnosis Professional Group Members are skilled in using these techniques and have reported excellent results in about 3 to 5 sessions.

Hypnosis is well documented in medical journals for its benefits in treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).  Numerous clinical trials showing its efficacy for IBS can be accessed at the National Library of Medicine, NIH.

Dr. Olafur S. Paisson, Psy.D., conducted a study published in the Lancet.  It involved a controlled trial of hypnotherapy in the treatment of severe refractory irritable bowel syndrome.  Thirty patients with severe symptoms unresponsive to other therapies were randomly chosen to receive seven sessions of hypnotherapy (15 patients) or seven sessions of psychotherapy plus placebo pills (15 patients). The psychotherapy group showed a small but significant improvement in abdominal pain, distension, and general well-being but not bowel activity patterns. The hypnotherapy patients showed a dramatic improvement in all central symptoms. The hypnotherapy group showed no relapses during the 3-month follow-up period.

Through the art of hypnosis and properly worded instruction, selective thinking is established to allow for positive suggestions to take hold.  Bloating, Swelling, Gas, and Pain can be drastically reduced and/or eliminated.
