Q: Do you know anyone who is extremely sensitive to sounds?
A: This is a very real problem that many people suffer from. It may be a sensory disorder called misophonia.
Misophonia is an extreme dislike of sounds, such as slurping or smacking one’s lips or crunching cereal or snacks. Some people overreact to the sounds of other people’s swallowing or throat clearing; it could even be the sounds of nature or birds chirping. Some people have an aversion to the sound of machinery, such as lawnmowers or motors running.
Many people with this problem are unaware that it is treatable. This is a problem that most people are too embarrassed to talk about. It is a very real problem, and hypnosis can help in many ways.
When working with a hypnotherapist, a person is guided to reframe negative associations and change the perception of the distressing sounds. By learning self-hypnosis, people can quickly reduce stress and enter a relaxed level to reinforce their newly learned processes. Anchors of comfort and hypnotic techniques are established to “dial down the sound” to dull or soften the noise.
