    When it comes to nurturing your heart, beans are one of the best food sources. Beans are an excellent source of protein. Protein is required for the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs. Protein helps build and repair muscle. The biggest muscle you have in your body is your heart.

   Split peas are dried green peas and are in the legume family. Legumes are in the bean family and are high in protein. Rich in folate for your overall energy and to help regulate your mood. An excellent source of fiber to help keep your intestines working properly. Contains antioxidants to help fight off free radicals that could lead to chronic dis-ease, such as cancer or heart disease. Split peas are high in selenium and potassium for your heart. Also rich in calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, Vitamin A,  B1, C, and K.

    Split peas contain phytoestrogens, plant chemicals that mimic the activity of estrogen in the body. Phytoestrogens play a valuable role in preventing and treating various types of cancer, including uterine, ovarian, and prostate cancer.

Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup

9 cups of water
1 2/3 cup split peas
½ cup rolled oats
1 (4-inch) piece kombu
1 onion (diced)
3 garlic cloves (minced)
4 cups sweet potato (peeled and cut into cubes)
1 ½ cups corn
3 tsp. sea salt
1 tsp. basil
½ tsp. each: sage and thyme
2 T. minced kale

Bring the 9 cups of water to a boil. Add the split peas, rolled oats, and kombu. Reduce to low heat and simmer for one hour. Puree the soup with a hand blender. Add the diced onion, garlic, and sweet potato. Simmer for 20 more minutes until the sweet potato is fork-tender. Add corn, sea salt, and seasonings. Turn off the heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before serving.
