Mark your calendars for October 11-13, 2024, because the highly anticipated 79th Annual Greater Detroit Gem, Mineral & Fossil Show is making a grand return! This family-friendly event invites you to embark on an exciting journey through the captivating world of gems, minerals, and fossils, all in an interactive and engaging setting.

Hosted by the Michigan Mineralogical Society, with Cranbrook Institute of Science as the presenting sponsor, the show will draw collectors, families, and school groups across the Midwest. At the Macomb Community College South Campus/Expo Center, located at 14500 E. 12 Mile Road, Warren, Mich, you’ll find a dazzling array of gem and mineral collections from around the globe.

Highlights of the Show:

  • Spectacular Exhibits: Marvel at specimens from the renowned A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum, Cranbrook Institute of Science, Royal Ontario Museum, and more. Top mineral collectors from across the country will showcase their treasures.
  • Mineral Fluorescence Booth: Witness the mesmerizing glow of minerals under ultraviolet lights. This activity is free with admission.
  • Himalayan Salt Lamps & Crystals: Discover stunning amethyst cathedrals from Brazil, citrine, rose quartz, and other semi-precious minerals, all available directly from dealers.
  • Gold Panning & Fossil Hunting: Back by popular demand, children can pan for natural gold specks (free with admission) and dig for fossils (additional fee applies). Adults can participate in the silent auction on October 12th and 13th, featuring minerals donated by the A.E. Seaman Mineral Museum and Cranbrook Institute of Science.

Engaging Activities for All Ages:

  • Hourly Prizes: In celebration of the 79th show, prizes will be given away every hour!
  • Expert Speakers: Don’t miss talks from renowned fossil dealer and scientist Donald Baumgartner, who will share insights on the science and movie magic behind Jurassic Park, and Erik Rintamaki, who will discuss his discovery of the glowing Yooperlites on the shores of Lake Superior.

Show Hours:

  • Friday, Oct. 11: 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 12: 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 13: 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
