A Valentine’s Day Twist

When Valentine’s Day comes to mind, what do you picture? If I could guess, I would probably bet that images of romantic candlelit dinners, roses, and chocolates dance throughout your mind. Even if these particular things don’t come to mind, we have all become subject to the commercialized and traditional idea of how one would spend a Valentine’s Day. It is a time when we show our love and affection towards another. We expect to dote on someone or shower those close to us with small gifts that remind them of how important and special they are to us.

However, for this particular Valentine’s Day, I would like to pose a twist that would present a new perspective to this special celebration. We should move towards the concept of what love looks like. This crucial idea is that the notion of self-love should always come first. Not perhaps a foreign concept to us, but it is one that I believe is overlooked through all aspects of our life. What brings you a belief of love, peace, and self-appreciation? Let’s look over a few ideas about self-love.

Gratitude. Remind yourself when you wake up how important you are and how glad you are that you have another day available on this planet. Be grateful for the people in your life and the journey that has brought you to this point. Remind yourself how many things you have accomplished and what you are excited about that will be in your future.

Do something that brings you joy. I cannot emphasize how important it is to find something that you are passionate about. Maybe it’s time to write that book you’ve wanted to start, take up hiking, call a friend, read a book or anything that gets those creative vibes flowing. It is essential to create an environment in which one can feel comfortable with oneself.

Special. Do something for yourself that you would do for someone else on this special day. Make a great dinner, buy yourself flowers, and get yourself a thoughtful card about how you feel about you. Celebrating yourself is a profound way of appreciating life through self-awareness of the gift of life you are experiencing. It keeps your body functioning, and your mind and your spirit alive.

Quiet time. This is one of the most important aspects of developing a deeper connection to my own spiritual self. To have time alone means to quiet the chatter in my mind and open my spirit to my soul. We often struggle to find moments of peace in this hectic world that we are always trying to keep up with, yet these are moments of introspection that bring insights to my journey. To find clarity among the chaos, we must have the ability to check in with ourselves, take inventory of our needs, and work to find solutions to problems that may be occurring — or just relax from the noise of life. Take a bath, a walk, or of course, meditate.

Enjoy the beauty of who you are and why you came here.
